While upgrading from a full to a queen mattress should be an exciting moment in one's life, it can be pretty daunting thinking about all you'll need to rebuy to fit your new bed. You'll likely need new sheets, a new duvet, a bigger mattress pad, and a bigger memory foam topper, if you're into that kind of thing. The good news is there's one thing you don't have to replace: your headboard. That's right, you can still use a full size headboard on a queen size bed―here's how:

Buy adapter brackets

I recently made the decision to upgrade to queen mattress and quickly began panicking after I realized I might need to part ways with my headboard. Because I didn't want to shell out an extra $150-$200 to replace it, I started wondering if I could somehow attach it to a larger frame. After a quick google search I found out that you can in fact use a smaller headboard on a larger frame. All you need are adapter brackets. I found an inexpensive set on Amazon and ordered right away.

The set comes with two brackets (one for each side of the bed) and the fasteners you'll need to secure the brackets to the bed frame. However, they don't come with extra hardware for you to secure your headboard to the brackets, so you might need to buy extra if the fasteners you were already using don't fit (mine didn't). Also, you'll need a wrench.

Attach the brackets to your bed frame

Step one is fairly easy: line up the adapter bracket with the slots on your bed frame and secure them in place using two fasteners.

Because I was attaching a headboard that's smaller than the frame, I secured the brackets so that the longer, horizontal slots faced toward each other. If you are trying to attach a headboard that's larger than the frame, you should attach the brackets in the opposite direction.

Attach your headboard to the brackets

Once the brackets are secured to the bed frame, you can attach the headboard legs to the horizontal slots on the bracket.

This part is just a little bit trickier than step one, as you'll need to make sure your headboard is even and level. To be honest, it took me a few tries to get it right, but if you have a spotter to help it will be very easy. Once you're satisfied with the placement, that's it, you're done.

It really is that simple. And as you can see above, the queen mattress isn't that much bigger than the full headboard. I was worried it might look awkward, but in my opinion it works just fine. And let's be real: saving money is the best.
